Yes, I'm Proud '90s Kid

I grew up in Libis, Quezon City, Metro Manila where everyone knew each other and treated each other like family. Everyone's mom was called tita/auntie even if they were not related 👫 or Manang Viring with respect.

We went outside to play on the streets, we got dirty till the sun goes down. We didn't eat fast food🍟🍔 we ate freshly home made food.

We got ice cream 🍦from the ice cream man that rings the bell when passing the streets or a home made ice candy straight from the freezer. We played teks (nope, it's different from the 'text' that younger generation know nowadays), sipa 👣, jolens (marbles), spider fights, cha-tong, Hedge hopping 🌳, Basketball🏀 , Patintero, jumping rope, luksong tinik, Chinese Garter, sipa, bahay-bahayan (where someone pretends to be mom dad and children) and many more.

Oh and we would make our own toys such wooden trucks made of scrap wood blocks using tansan (bottle caps) as wheels, or sarangolas (kites) and spike our threads with bubog (shards of glass) & paste and cut down other kites who dared come near ours.

There were no bottled water🍶, we drank it straight from Poso (deepwell)🚰 And if we get to drink softdrinks (Sarsi/Coke/Pepsi/etc.) we would share & drink from the same bottle after wiping it with our mucky sleeves, We didn't have kids tv channels 📺 We rode our bikes 🚲 for hours and made slide going down the rode with piece of wood with a rub of candle or gumamela leaves as pampadulas.

We made bubbles from a detergent or shampoo with Gumamela crushed flowers to make it more slippery. There was no such thing as a mobile phone or any other electronic devices/gadgets 📱💻📵.

We weren't AFRAID OF ANYTHING. If someone had a fight, that's what it was...a fist fight👊. Kids didn't have guns🔫 or knives🔪.The street lights 💡were our curfew or until our mom/dad shouted our names out the window. School was mandatory, but you would still wag a couple of lessons every now and then ✏️📒.

We watched our mouths around our elders👴🏼👵🏼 because we knew we'll get whipped with either a belt, a shoe, or slippers 👞👠. This was our generation and proud of it.

Too bad our future grandkids will never experience what we did growing up.
